John E. Baker, Ph.D.

Dr. Baker received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from the University of London in 1984. He carried out his postdoctoral training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin where, in 1987, he joined the faculty. Dr. Baker is currently Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pharmacology & Toxicology, and Biochemistry. Dr. Baker is also an investigator at the Children's Research Institute at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. He has authored over 60 publications in cardiovascular disease basic research and has presented the results of his studies at national and international meetings.

Dr. Baker has been awarded over 35 grants, and his current and past sources of funding include the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, Ronald McDonald Children's Charities, the Culpeper Foundation and the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Baker's research program has the potential to change the landscape for the treatment of heart disease. He has developed innovative approaches to the treatment of cardiovascular disease, reflecting his commitment to translational research.

Professor Baker's research program serves as a nexus to translate basic science discoveries into clinical applications at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Dr. Baker has developed and maintained strong collaborations between basic scientists and clinicians to translate laboratory findings made in his Medical College of Wisconsin-based space into clinical applications. He has achieved this through extensive interactions and collaborations with basic scientists and clinicians.
